Women of the Celts in Myth, Legend and Story
I just ran across this website of local legends from the Isle of Pabay, a small island off the Isle of Skye, Scotland. Because this is written from a more local, folklore perspective it contains some interesting information, including the old Gaelic spellings . . .
The Isle of Skye is where the Warrior Priestess Scatha hosted a training camp for Celtic warriors including the legendary Cu Chulainn; the photo reference shows the Coolin' Mountains in the background, which bare the name of the ancient Hero . . . Anam Cara, Bonnie
"Sgathaich (Scatha) was a formidable woman, a teacher of war-craft and a prophetess (Druid?) who foretells Cu Chulainn's future through divination. She was reputed to be the matron of self-defence and female independence as well as the guardian of young people who seek to know their full potential. Men came from further afield than Gaul to train with. her, and if they passed her rigorous tests they were more feared than any other fighting men."

Many years ago I had the opportunity to visit Skye and the site historically attributed as Scatha's home. Little left other than what appears to be a portion of a stone wall, but the grounds were vibrant and powerful. Didn't want to leave, my ex-husband almost had to drag me back to the car!
Thanks for the link to a very special area of the world. Skye is truly a magickal place.

Re: Women of the Celts in Myth, Legend and Story
Tue, February 13, 2007 - 11:30 PMSkye is awesome, I could spend weeks there just roaming around these islands . . . The link below shows the Coolin mountains in the background, I can just imagine the stories of Scatha warrior camp in the mountains (the other photos are also of Skye) . . . We actually found the remains of an Iron age settlement (not Scatha's) by following the Odinance Survey maps; it was so exciting to trek out into the heather, and along the seacliff, and actually find something that resembled the foundation of a village and stone fort . . . I really felt like I was walking in ancient footsteps . . .
Thanks for sharing your story. Anam Cara, Bonnie

Sat, May 12, 2007 - 2:00 PMThe history of the Celtic people is similar to that of the Native American people. -

Sat, May 12, 2007 - 7:45 PMI completely agree . . . I was really into Native American art and spirituality until I discovered my own heritage . . . So much of their life style and customs were similar, and even their unfortunate end; so called barbarian, "civilizxed" by the a great invading power . . .
